I love graphics code, because every I learn new convoluted ways to do the same thing. For example, today I found code containing "sqrt(x)^2"

@FioraAeterna I've suggested p-norm with moderately high p as a fast vectorized branchless approximation to max(a1,a2,...,an).. & it worked! -
@RichFelker max already is branchless on any sane architecture! -
@FioraAeterna This was for GPU stuff, which I don't do myself, but the person who tried it found it useful. I may be misremembering details.
