Compiler optimizations are a mitigation against the threat of programmers writing indecipherable crap "because it's faster".
@laurentbercot I've seen quite a bit of code written in obfuscated forms "because it gets optimized better".

@laurentbercot And sadly sometimes the 10% or even 5% perf is needed. 10% of 10MW is pretty significant both environmentally & $$$, no? -
@RichFelker $$$ yes, env no. Companies scrounging 5% perf don't save energy: they advertise 5% more serving capacity. Been there, done that. -
@laurentbercot The really sad part is that their clients could be saving 70-90% just by not using Java/Tomcat/Mysql/etc...

@RichFelker Real cases where manual optimizations are needed: 10%. Misguided attempts at manual optimization: 90%. Let's work on the latter.
