today i learned that "SD Express" is a thing. that is, SD card with a PCIe interface. IOMMU should be mandatory on literally all hardware with PCIe in 2018

Ran into that several times with Plan 9 on HPC where I never used the interfaces the way the hw apparently intended because it was unsafe (eg, RDMA without receiver control) or otherwise not what you'd like to do.

It seems surprisingly common to build RDMA systems where the remote says "here, have this at this address" and the remote will alway say "well, thank you for that!" even when booting.

Or, you can have a system where that's protected by "keys", so the remote says "here, have this at the key you issued in complete isolation earlier as a prereq for comms" and the remote now booting says "well, thank you for that, you remembered my number!" with a similar result
