Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

today i learned that "SD Express" is a thing. that is, SD card with a PCIe interface. IOMMU should be mandatory on literally all hardware with PCIe in 2018

seriously. they show you in the whitepaper how it can DMA everywhere like that's a feature https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/pls/latest_whitepapers/SD_Express_Cards_with_PCIe_and_NVMe_Interfaces_White_Paper.pdf …pic.twitter.com/bDrCYjt1RB

i predicted a while ago that everything's going to converge to 8b10b or 64b/66b over differential pair but i have not expected that the industry will implement this by literally sticking PCIe in every hole where they can get the signal to stay on traces

not sure how i missed this; why the fuck does your whitepaper show your SD card talking directly to a modem? what are you people on?! cURSEDpic.twitter.com/RyTNE5Awuo

Some hardware person is deluded that there's a reasonable operating system design where files get uploaded or downloaded directly from/to storage device.

The misconceptions of how hardware people think software could reasonably use the interfaces they provide are really fascinating.

Ran into that several times with Plan 9 on HPC where I never used the interfaces the way the hw apparently intended because it was unsafe (eg, RDMA without receiver control) or otherwise not what you'd like to do.

It seems surprisingly common to build RDMA systems where the remote says "here, have this at this address" and the remote will alway say "well, thank you for that!" even when booting.

Or, you can have a system where that's protected by "keys", so the remote says "here, have this at the key you issued in complete isolation earlier as a prereq for comms" and the remote now booting says "well, thank you for that, you remembered my number!" with a similar result
