today i learned that "SD Express" is a thing. that is, SD card with a PCIe interface. IOMMU should be mandatory on literally all hardware with PCIe in 2018

You work on SH, your should know that this has been done before :P (Dreamcast G2 works this way. It works but doesn't get the absolute best performance)

Is there a good writeup on this? Is it sufficiently compatible with OS driver architectures that the same principal (a "PCIe condom") could be used on modern PCs?

The device I'm referring to was only ever officially used for an RTL8139. I think both Linux and NetBSD still use their normal drivers with an extra driver for the G2 glue. This also requires drivers to allocate bounce buffers for DMA. I think Linux/NetBSD do this automatically.
