the “soros-funded protesters” thing should be understood as both an anti-semitic dogwhistle and an attack on the idea of legitimate opposition itself, a tactic imported from european far-right parties

I recently read a thing about the harassment faced by the first black family to move into Levittown, Pennsylvania in 1958 and was struck by how one of the most common claims by white neighbors was "They were paid actors, funded by the NAACP"

That's often an accusation I've read from people who try to delegitimize Rosa Parks' act of resistance on the bus. That it was planned & staged, that she was funded by the NAACP, etc ad nauseam ad infinitum.

What's most frustrating is the implication that planned means not legitimate. Successful activists with legitimate motives for their actions plan them because it works. Doing what works to achieve liberation is not illegitimate.
