Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Allegedly a supply chain attack on Supermicro's servers installed small CPUs disguised as passive capacitors on the mainboard that were able to take over the BMC, which could then compromise the main CPU: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-10-04/the-big-hack-how-china-used-a-tiny-chip-to-infiltrate-america-s-top-companies …pic.twitter.com/OR5jSvtAma

The BMC is vastly over-privileged and tied into so many parts of the system. Securing it is vital to secure the root of trust, and open source firmware like OpenBMC and u-BMC are good first steps to trusting it.pic.twitter.com/PryOjMQWvs

What about removing the BMC from the board with a hot air gun? Would that work, or is the BMC required to start a mainboard?

It's generally required to start the chip. On laptops/desktops it's a microcontroller that monitors the physical power button.

Could it easily be replaced with a socket to attach an open hardware module in its place? Possibly not connecting the pins that allow access it should not have?

I don't think there are sockets for these types of chips, and the pinout may not be available.

I don't mean a socket that would bold one. Rather one that physically fits the space on board and the pads that you could plug an external daughterboard into to replace its role.

If enough motherboard information is available, I think it could be done.
