Had a nice conversation yesterday with someone whose politics are 180 degrees from mine on most issues. It reminded me that, despite what it may seem, current political rhetoric is at best just an ugly caricature of who most of us are.

Yes, these policies certainly are, and it's certainly urgent that we stop them. That doesn't mean I can't reach out to my neighbors. On the contrary, I think it makes it more urgent than ever that I do.

If you want to have any chance of this being anything but a monumental waste of your efforts and energy, you need really good heuristics for guessing who's worth trying to save from the intoxication.
