DNS blackholing kinda works, but violates end user agency, breaks when legit content is on same domains, and will eventually not be viable as a consequence of DNS security & privacy efforts (encrypted transport, signed results).

Domain based blocking is still a workhorse for sure, because econ101 means 1st parties do not want liability or IT costs of (direct or CNAME proxy) integration of 3rd parties — script src= still cheaper. This could change but not quickly or to exclusion of all 3p scripts.
