Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

I for one am thankful that the state has absolutely no power over who is and who isn't allowed to write code. (There is a seperate conversation to be had about the safety ratings of the code itself...but licenses to code are inherently dystopian)https://twitter.com/triketora/status/1043221766200614912 …

one of those days where i am compelled to opine strongly that there should be a licensing process for software engineers. jfc software engineers should not be allowed to write and ship such shitty code as is out there today...

There's a difference between a "license to code" and a "licensing software engineers". I went to engineering school, I'm competent to do a lot of engineering work, but I'm not allowed to call myself or work as a professional engineer. The limits are on how my work is handled.

if the only people who can be employed and deploy significant systems are the ones with a certification, then the semantics don't really matter. We should be opening up this discipline not closing it off.

The right solution probably involves regulating the sort of capitalism that incentivizes shipping commercial products full of crap-quality code that puts users & public in danger, not regulating the coding. But nobody wants to do that...

I agree, that's the type of regulation a PE certificate is about. You can't just randomly build critical infrastructure; someone had to sign off, someone who would be liable if it fails, which offsets the profit motivation to cut corners. It isn't perfect. But it does work.
