OK, by git commands I should have said "git commands that operate on the state of [your checkout of] the repo itself".

...this was basically the reason why I'm doing a 'dirty-check' before all automatic git operations in my fips cmake wrapper. As soon as a local git repo isn't in sync with the remote, a warning will be printed and all git ops on that repo will be skipped.
