An easier yet mildly less secure way is to use an OAuth token as part of the clone URL, so something like: git clone https://myusername:OAUTHTOKEN@github.com/foo/bar

This doesn't solve the problem of making github repo urls which are embedded in other repos work without local patching. The tweet you replied to does (!!).
