Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Is there a cheap & cheap to maintain (no ink that costs a printer per month) printer with built-in network (IPP) that actually works? HP firmware is crap, randomly drops off network & goes nonresponsive even when on.

Having here an Epson EPL-N2000 that I've bought used back in '97. It's used every day. Having purchased 2 imaging cartridges on eBay for 1EUR each - which gives me a runway of couple of more years. Built in network card, but no IPP.

I need it to just work out of box with standard protocols on Linux, Windows, Android (Android CUPS Print), and iOS.

Linux: check Windows: check Android: never tried to print from there IOS: never used it and will never have a device running this.

For Linux, does it work from Firefox without installing any local cups daemon mess or stateful "add printer", just with the default auto discovery?

Nope. Used cups to print to it via port 9100 and using ljet4 style driver.

I’ve had good luck with low-end Brother laser printers. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, and they seem pretty robust. Admittedly their web-based config UIs are terrible, but I set mine up six or seven years ago and basically haven’t had to touch it since.

<3 laser. Any particular model? Does network printing work reliably? Wired or wireless?

Mine’s an HL2140, I think. Does USB, 10/100 and wireless. I’ve only ever used it wired though (it lives right next to my main switch). Bought it used when I was in college and it’s always Just Worked. Admittedly I don’t print much, but it’s been perfect for my use.

Does the HL-L2350DW look comparable? It looks like the current low-end model.

Yeah, I’m looking at getting that one now that the drum on mine is shot - looks like it’s pretty much the same, just adds the ability to print on both sides of the page.

I got a Samsung laser printer for the price equivalent of about 12 cups of coffee, roughly 6 years ago. Connects to my WiFi and is still going on its original cartridge.

I got a Brother laser printer for free because it was out of toner. Lasted me 2 years with an “empty” cartridge.

Laser lasts forever if you do a reasonable amount of printing. Inkjet dries up and gets clogged after a month or so of sitting idle.

We moved to an EPSON. It has networking (multiple kinds,) has individual inkwells, and only cost us $30 to buy at Walmart. We use it across Linux, and macOS.
