I find it amusing when people talk about the google search algorithm as if it were a single, static thing based on pagerank. A former student of mine worked on the search quality team. They are continually making changes to fight spammers and fix problems. 1/

If that's still their goal (which I find hard to believe) they're doing a horrible job at it. I suspect their actual goal (or rather their superiors' goal imposed on them) is to get you to as many junk pages displaying ads they're selling as possible.

Even before it got this bad though, and even if there are no foul motives in play, their approach is wrong. They insist on tuning "value neutral" algorithms under the misguided belief one will give good search results, rather than paying active moderators & delisting all SEO spam
