libxcrypt is considering dropping “gensalt” support for legacy hash prefixes "", "_", "$1$", "$2a$", "$2x$", "$2y$", "$3$", "$md5", and "$sha1". They could be used to authenticate, but not to hash new passphrases. If you object please comment onhttps://github.com/besser82/libxcrypt/issues/28 …
Also bcrypt which is NOT legacy/deprecated. It's the best of anything widely supported and practical.
