Further note: if you’re anywhere smaller than a big state school, pre-requisites do not matter. Talk to the prof and you’re in.

At a big state school, you may need to get an advisor or dean to sign off on it. This is also possible, but will require persistence. Start early.

I went to huge state school where faculty actively encouraged me to ignore prerequisites for their classes and the registration system - at least in the early 2000s - did not enforce them for grad classes. Only space limits led to enforcement.
