Linux on the desktop will never be a reality purely because of systemd-resolved and captive portals

Don't ask me why, ask all the airports, coffee shops, restaurants, etc that do it to this day... in the US I can imagine it's a liability thing (they're always asking to agree to "don't watch porn and don't sue us" terms)
-
Oh yes I know the awful reasons the providers do it. I don't understand why ppl use their networks when 4G/LTE/whatever is faster and less invasive.
-
My phone has like 3 wifi APs saved for the few no-captive-portal cafes with gigabit fiber, and home ones. Otherwise I just use cellular data.
-
Ah, I am nearly WiFi-only. My plan only has 3gb data, so using LTE when I'm out is expensive (and I'm on T-Mo which is frankly nearly the cheapest of them)
-
Cricket has unlimited data for $35/mo.
-
It's throttled after 2GB (or larger threshold if you pay for more), but even with the throttling it's faster than most bad cafe wifi.
-
I think cricket is a tmo mvno so that's probably the same thing I get (though mine is $40/3gb instead)
-
I've never run out, so I don't know what "slower" means. I thought it went to 2g, so I make sure never to overrun. TMO HSPA/+ is pretty solid ime

ime it's far more ubiquitous in the parts of Europe I travel to than it is in the US. The worst ones only allow you to connect with Facebook and implicitly 'like' the store's Facebook page for you.
