Linux on the desktop will never be a reality purely because of systemd-resolved and captive portals

Everywhere.

Why? It made sense before mobile data was ubiquitous. Now it's like "why use somebody else's awful network, especially when it's advertising malicious interception as soon as you connect?"
-
Don't ask me why, ask all the airports, coffee shops, restaurants, etc that do it to this day... in the US I can imagine it's a liability thing (they're always asking to agree to "don't watch porn and don't sue us" terms)
-
Oh yes I know the awful reasons the providers do it. I don't understand why ppl use their networks when 4G/LTE/whatever is faster and less invasive.

My phone has like 3 wifi APs saved for the few no-captive-portal cafes with gigabit fiber, and home ones. Otherwise I just use cellular data.
-
Ah, I am nearly WiFi-only. My plan only has 3gb data, so using LTE when I'm out is expensive (and I'm on T-Mo which is frankly nearly the cheapest of them)

Cricket has unlimited data for $35/mo.

It's throttled after 2GB (or larger threshold if you pay for more), but even with the throttling it's faster than most bad cafe wifi.
