I asked on IRC recently and the only remotely realistic suggestion I got was "try shelling out and streaming png frames to ffmpeg"

congratulations for providing a suggestion that's even worse than UVC

Worst thing about GigE Vision: The NDA that one has to sign in order to get the standard prevents you from publishing open source software that supports it. (Otherwise we would have released our GigE Vision libraries at my last company.)

(That was maybe 6 years ago. No idea if the situation around the GigE Vision NDA improved in the meantime.)

let's say person X ignores NDA and pseudonymously publishes some GigE Vision software. clearly person X risks being sued if their real identity is unmasked. what about people who use that software? surely they didn't sign anything.

Probably. But who will be maintaining it, who will be fixing bugs, if nobody who has seen the standard is allowed to work on it?

Somehow leaking the standard doc itself might be the "better" solution. But it's *heavily* watermarked. Company was so scared, they never gave us access to the digital copy. We only had printouts. Spent hours searching for stuff by flipping through pages..

Sounds like a task for book scanner + OCR (text less likely to preserve watermarks).

A lot of tables and FSM diagrams if I remember correctly.. (But I may confuse it with a different spec. It's been a while..)

Yeah I was thinking you'd have to do something special for diagrams...
