@tjssh Hi, I'm sorry for asking this, but it's bugging me/causing issues on my setup.
When is ssh-agent _not_ needed to do public-key authentication? Are ssh clients smart enough to look in ~/.ssh directory for keys WITHOUT ssh-agent running? That seems to be what's happening!

Yeah. To put it in a different way, ssh-agent is not needed if you have all keys on your local filesystem and you don't care that if they're encrypted you have to type the password every time. ssh automatically finds ~/.ssh/id_rsa ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 et al. ssh-agent not involved.
