I just realized that the reason 0x hex literals are so verbose is that C incorrectly bet on octal. 40 years later we’re still paying the price :(

And octal won as the public interface for file permissions. (POSIX eventually standardized the values, effectively making the cryptic symbolic macros obsolete).

And x86 instructions are much simpler in octal.
