I can't wait for 3D printers to be heavily regulated when guns aren't. It's even better than the gun emoji saga.

The fun thing about 3d printers is they can print components to make 3d printers which in turn aren't backdoored with regulatory firm-mal-ware.

There are already so many open-source 3D printer designs, and so many 3D printers manufactured outside the US, that trying to regulate them is absurd. (Also: it's still so easy to buy a gun, why would anyone bother 3D printing one?)

this is true of photocopiers, and yet none allow you to photocopy a dollar bill with precision. They all leave marks to make sure it is identified as fake

There are open-source photocopier designs?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/icopy/ this could be altered to make a 2d scanner https://www.pi3dscan.com/index.php/cost or this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-mFQVSL7fU … or this https://www.diybookscanner.org/ . The firmware in all by law must prevent scanning currency to prevent counterfeiting

Just don't ship any firmware, require user to obtain their own. This is the way all devices (PCs, phones, etc.) should be since vendors have proven they can't be trusted not to include crapware/user-hostile features.

Ideal scanner is just a fixed-focus camera mounted appropriately below glass bed with uniform light source. The slow stuff with moving parts is just a legacy design from a backwards industry.

Printer is the more interesting problem for open hardware since it necessitates moving parts with precision controls.
