Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

OK, so I feel like we should talk about the results of this poll and others in infosec & impact of tech on society should run a more serious version of it...https://twitter.com/RichFelker/status/1023225579666137088 …

Are you familiar with Facebook video (present day) and its UX on mobile apps?

In my informal Twitter poll, 91% of respondents said they were not familiar with Facebook video's mobile app UX.

Originally, video on Facebook was just an extension of photos: a way for users to upload personal videos to share with their friend networks (and for pages to upload videos to share with users who like/follow or just browse their page).

At some point, and I've lost track of the history but it was in the news at the time, Facebook decided they wanted to compete with YouTube as a video platform. I'm guessing very few of us know what that actually meant...

The Facebook video UX (on mobile at least) is designed to draw you away from the particular interaction from which you landed on a video, and into a world of video recommendations built on Facebook's idea of who you are.

The interface, once you tap on a video, is a separate, black-background infinite-vertical-scroll, starting with the video you tapped playing, followed by related videos and ads, auto-scrolling smoothly down to the next when one finishes playing.

Like YouTube, they have no engagement value - nobody can read your comments before hundreds of other comments scroll them off - but presumably your reactions are used to tailor recommendation to other users.

Pretty much all the videos that appear are "viral content" of various genres: feel-good, outrage, cute-animals, poverty-porn, violent-accidents, and of course the overtly political.

The big UX differences from YT are the auto-advance to a single recommended next video and the lack of discovery/control over what else is there and what you see next.

I don't consider myself an expert on the subject, but having spent some time looking at FB video UX, I feel like it's something our communities should be studying and discussing, and likely a major ingredient in disinformation campaigns and radicalization around them.
