So, my assessment so far of rpi 3b+ as an entertainment-center/retro-emu box is: complete fail.

Graphics and audio hardware support is flaky and doesn't work at all without lots of tweaking. USB host controller seems to have serious bugs...

After starting xfwm (vs X with no wm), the keyboard suddenly switched into lagged mode. Each keypress made the *previous* key go through.

CPU is way too weak to emulate anything past NES or Gameboy, at least with current software. Couldn't get kodi to build but I can't imagine its performance would be remotely acceptable, and I don't know any other out-of-the-box entertainment center UI software to try.

So for the time being this sounds like a domain where the right solution is "repurpose a junk Spectre-afflicted x86 box"

Replying to @RichFelker
I'm so sorry I recommended a device that caused such frustration. As you speculated earlier, I've only used the RPi3+Raspbian combo, never evaluated just the hardware solution in isolation. I should have made that clear. Many apologies.

No problem. I'd been wanting to play with and evaluate the hardware for years, and a lower model would have taken even longer for me to determine unsuitable (longer compile times).
