It was introduced as a less-awful alternative to handing over your gmail password to crap like FB that wanted to harvest it, but Google should have just enforced ToS and blocked access from harvesters.

I remember a story of a bank telling customer that the bank never asks for their password and people were like "I should never share it, bank told me". Until a fake email asked for password and they were like "now I should share it, bank told me". People will click anything.
