Started pondering a time-unlock crypto scheme using broadcasted public keys; but it quickly became "We trust the USG to know all future private keys before anyone else and then broadcast them on a schedule via GPS."

Hm? This seems like a potential actual (maybe-non-idiotic?) application for proof-of-work...

Yea; that's the other approach; but disparity between 'attackers' w/ clusters & 'consumers' w/ smartphones is too great. Need altruistic cluster to solve & broadcast. And broadcasting is hard part: if you could receive broadcasts reliably you prob don't need time unlock crypto.

That's what I mean by proof-of-work: it doesn't have to be altruistic if, by cracking a key, nodes are able to append a block and thereby obtain something of financial value.

There are certainly issues with nodes trying to decide whether to disclose or privately benefit from a cracked key based on what information it protects; I don't know exactly how you'd handle that.
