I think you have this backwards. "Can't link to code compiled with -fPIC" can't happen. PIC can link with anything. Non-PIC can't be used in PIE or shared libs.

Pretty sure I saw gnu ld explode trying to mix non PIC rust code with PIC openssl and non PIC gnulibc, but I maybe I'm remembering wrong.
