Observation: In some instances, “Blockchain” doesn’t mean actually literal “proof-of-work blockchain” at all, it’s the popularization of related ideas that don’t have large public understanding. Merkel trees, hashing, consensus, database replication, public key crypto, etc.

Blockchain means (roughly, tweet-sized explanation) merkle tree + consensus protocol. Anyone who calls a plain merkle tree (e.g. git) a blockchain is either an idiot or engaged in deceptive marketing, probably both.

have you ever tried to send a PR? There's a consensus protocol around git to boot! Well, ok, maybe not git itself, but github for sure. So. Should we call Github blockchain now?

That's why I said roughly/tweet-sized. What actually constitutes a "consensus protocol" in a meaningful sense takes a lot more to describe.
