Maybe Microsoft is embracing ICE because they're still trying to catch up with 90s-era compiler tech.

If you have an ICE you have an ICE. What is there to hate except that the compiler has errors and you're not helping fix them? The alternative is wrong code-gen bugs?

I think the morbid joke went over your head, but if you want an answer, "what to hate" was just that gcc was so buggy back then. As for alternatives, maybe backing out and doing most-naive-possible codegen and printing a warning, rather than breaking the build?
