when i see someone use the phrase "born a woman" i just think that person has a fundamental misunderstanding of trans folks and doesn't listen to them at all. it is sad.

it's not a bad thing to misunderstand a topic about which you have no firsthand knowledge. it doesn't make you a bad person. it makes you human. but what becomes questionable is how you respond when your assumptions are corrected.

the misconception behind the phrase "born a woman" is one that i had 4 years ago. a trans coworker corrected me and explained why i was wrong to use that phrase. i listened. it made so much sense. i apologized. i didn't make that mistake again. this is not hard.

and yeah this thread is kinda sub-tweety, and that's not really my style. but i think the topic is more important than the person involved. and maybe i hold out hope that this person still might listen. don't let this be the hill you die on, man. you can do better.

however, i know these 2 things: 1.) twitter mobs suck. it's very hard to challenge your beliefs when you've got a mob coming at you, bcz for most ppl, their instincts will be to get defensive & double down. if you have a large audience, you will likely never change your mind.

Re: the large audience, is it likely that the large portion mindlessly defending your bad belief/behavior is a big part of the difficulty to challenge & change?

I think it depends on the person/topic. Anyone with a big audience knows how both sides of an argument will flock in to give their opinions.

I just don't get the phenomenon of randos flocking in to mob someone, and generally assume bad faith. I was thinking more of the situation where ppl with genuine relationship (at least fans) are upset, but many more offee mindless apologism.
