FOSS needs something like Freshmeat again. It should not be this hard to answer "what FOSS projects exist in this problem domain?"

Man oh man, you're not wrong. I think some think github fills that role, but to me it's missing the key focus on releases & curation.

Github doesn't at all. Plenty of stuff's not on github, and it doesn't classify or curate. Adding that to gh would be a mistake; it needs to be factored as something independent.

Release announcement isn't so important and was imo a big waste of human effort on fm. Could be automated though (scanning for new dl link or git tag).

Hm - different perspective here, I actually really enjoyed the release announcement feature. But I agree the effort/benefit ratio was off and that it should be automated.

I liked the organic project health indication from the feed of releases, but it was a pain as a maintainer.

And moderating release announcements had to be a factor in the cost of running fm.
