Worst case scenario, the data is compressed with a variant of LZ77 (LZS), so it should be possible to shave this yak and get your data back.

Yeah but I have no idea what the data structures are. It's obviously not a stream because Stacker supported full random access. Might be block layer or might have interaction with FAT fs structures.

Dumb question but doesn't hurt to ask: have you tried booting an emulated system with that volume and see what happens?

No, I don't have the software readily available, and if I remember correctly there was already sufficient corruption that it wouldn't mount at the time I made these backups...

So I'm doubtful I'll be able to get anything off it without knowing the data structures or having an existing open source tool I can hack on to attempt to read them.

Incentive to succeed: I think this volume contains fragments of the long-lost Compuserve ACTION games forum (early doom modding scene).

On a positive note, I already found 421+ DOOM-related zip files from that era not locked away on Stacker volumes. Need to either find time to check if they're already archived publicly or find an archivist who wants to.
