I truly did not expect the MAGA nastiness to be this sharply focused at children.

You forget the treatment reserved to them in the 40s: you attack children because of the infinite anguish it causes on your victims, rendered unable to protect them. Sadism, evil and grandeur. You then either re-educate the children or get rid of them.

It also forces otherwise decent people to choose to support the side that willingly hurts kids. Once you’ve made that choice, a part of your soul dies.

Pretty sure there's nothing "otherwise decent" about these people.

I think the process is very simple. Start with a random sampling of the population. Force them to do something evil. The decent ones quit. What’s left is vile.

Exactly. That's why you *can't* have organizations with missions like ICE, where, even before the recent atrocities, the vast majority of people who would ever want to work there are outright evil.

With normal police, at least there's a narrative that a lot of the work they do is good ("protect and serve", blah blah) and a lot of people go into it with that attitude. With ICE, the whole mission is "destroy the lives of people who aren't hurting anyone".

And in particular, "destroy the lives of black and brown people".
