Those who are using range types in Postgres: what are your use cases? Why did you choose range types? Do you use GiST indexes? Any benefits over regular multi-column indexes?

Two-column btree doesn't give you efficient containment queries.

select * from table where :input_timestamp between start_ts and end_ts; - what's the plan for range equivalent of this with gist and with two-column btree indexes?

Both wil give a single index-only scan. No?

Type of scan doesn't matter, number of buffers scanned does. So you have a 1000s of day-long events a day (say, office presence) and want to check who was in office at specific instant. You have couple of years of data before and a couple of years later. What will get scanned?

Check yourself Darafei. I had 5 buffers for each cases. This is the thing. Range/GiST loses to 2columns/btree in all aspects now, significantly. It seems the only true benefit is exclusion constraints.

If you have a case when GiST will give less buffers hit/read, it would be really interesting to see. And timing, I think, is strongly correlated with buffers numbers in this case.

Broadly speaking, if the two-column btree index is on (start, end) then it is fast only when querying for data that is near the start of the table. If on (end, start) then it is only fast for values near the end. Only the GiST index can be fast for arbitrary values.

I've updated this page https://gitlab.com/snippets/1959449 … showing that GiST performance is much more predictable once we start checking arbitrary values in the range.
