FWIW I prefer the more procedural explanation, even though it seems superficially less SQLish: for each row of the left table, join against each matching row of the right table, unless there are none in which case output just one row extended with nulls
This then makes it easier to understand what's going on when you do a LEFT JOIN LATERAL (...) ON true, which is a remarkably useful construct
