This is not standard SQL. The GROUP BY clause in standard SQL is actually somewhat limited, and that has led implementations to extend it in possibly incompatible ways. In the standard, the elements of a GROUP BY must be column references and NOT aliases.
That is, given SELECT a AS b FROM sometable GROUP BY b; if "sometable" has a column "b", the GROUP BY clause refers to that column, and NOT to "a". If it has no such column, the query is not valid per the spec.
Accordingly, if a database allows GROUP BY alias as an extension, you have the possibility that adding a column to the base tables might silently change the meaning of the query, since GROUP BY real_column must be preferred over GROUP BY alias if both exist.
The standard-compliant way to do this is to use a subquery: SELECT x FROM (select (expression) AS x FROM ...) AS s GROUP BY s.x;
That said, the use of the same expression in both the select-list and GROUP BY also seems to be fairly widely supported. This puzzles me a little, because it caused me headaches when implementing GROUPING SETS for postgresql
