is there a succinct way of describing programming languages that would include bash, haskell and javascript but not SQL? "application programming languages" and "languages that aren't relational" are a bit of a mouthful. (Prolog could play for either team probably)

this probably shows why TC wasn't quite the discriminator I was looking for. It's more about ergonomics - SQL is good at dealing with queries over flat tables, general purpose languages are good at dealing with tree-shaped data (any embedding is going to induce a tree)

and tbh, I like that SQL pushes me in that direction - instead of writing a pl/pgsql function to traverse a tree with embedded child/parent foreign keys, i'll use something like ltree & get predictable performance.
