The text is amazing. Defining the redistribution of wealth as "anti-Biblical" flies in the face of a number of scriptural passages such as Acts 4, wherein the early church functioned as a commune, taking everyone's personal property and redistributing it according to need.

Also, like...yeah, we're "interested in redistributing wealth, opportunity, and privileges in society." You caught us! The way those things have historically been distributed were and are unjust, and the church has been complicit in that injustice. So...busted, I guess?pic.twitter.com/Q9tHzJkDj8

We're also a "vehicle to promote abortion, homosexuality, gender confusion, and a host of other ideas that are antithetical to the Gospel." First, being LGBTQ is *not* antithetical to the Gospel. Second, that's a packed vehicle we're in! It's like a clown car, but with Jesus!pic.twitter.com/OdMs4f7s0H

Glenn Beck and Jerry Falwell Jr. are referred to as "authoritative voices." They have authority in that there are people who fervently follow them, but being followed fervently isn't by itself an indicator of goodness. Heck, Keeping Up With The Kardashians has fervent followers.

Then there's the "watch out the liberal mainline churches embraced social justice, and now they're shrinking!" ubiquitous canard. One, correlation is not causation. Two, mainline denoms peaked during the Cold War. Three, white evangelicalism is now declining at a similar rate.

Claiming that "social justice warriors routinely shut down speech that they disagree with" is especially rich. I could do an entire longform essay on censorship in Christian academia if anyone cares to commission such a piece from me. This is objection is 100% projection.

FFS, the resolution *even instructs the SBC to avoid the terms "social justice" and "social justice warrior."* The cognitive dissonance is whiplash-inducing. "The SJWs are trying to shut down speech they disagree with! Also, don't use these forms of speech to describe them!"pic.twitter.com/etQ9NnCMDg

That's mostly comical, though. The next part is serious: all schools are encouraged to review to ensure social justice isn't taught. I repeat: censorship in Christian academia is widespread and insidious. Yet "social justice warriors" (oops, I said it) are the thought police?pic.twitter.com/84x1PyPPxv

And as a cherry on this lack of sundae, the author of this resolution apparently is a Paige Patterson fanboy, and has insisted that the SBC seminary leader who encouraged battered women to return to their abusive husbands has "been unjustly accused." I realize this resolution may not go anywhere. But as
@KEBrightbill pointed out, it's important to call these thinigs out because Christianity tries to rebrand itself and gloss over its past sins (like how every January we pretend that MLK unified us when white Xians hated him).Show this thread -
Since this is picking up steam--if you liked my TED talk, you'll love my book, Oregon Trail Theology, coming out this September from
@ChurchPubInc. It's about the millennial generation's relationship with the church, including over issues of social justicehttps://www.churchpublishing.org/oregontrailtheology …Show this thread
