God, I love archives! The way historians use them is changing, though, and that probably will make for a different kind of history.

The 17th century Shah Mosque in Isfahan is justifiably famous among ... but the bazaar in the square around it (Naqsh-e Jahan) was just as beautiful to me because it was filled with the everyday life of Isfahan, a true city of the Silk Road.

More : the stunning Safavid paintings and ceilings at the Chehel Sotoun pavilion in Isfahan, a World Heritage site. I found the frescos here to be hard to photograph well but they are truly priceless, comparable to the best of Renaissance Italy.

And there's the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, which in addition to Monets, Van Goghs, and Warhols, had an exhibit of contemporary Iranian sculptors that blew me away.

... and lunch in Tehran, at a riverside restaurant where the waiter brought a tiny Canadian flag to my table to make me feel at home, since it was the closest they had to a US one.

But aren't just architecture - they're also this kitten taking an afternoon nap in a Tehran bazar, hanging out with Shrek, two young sisters touring the Shah's palace. And 80 million more stories.

I was lucky enough to spend a month in Iran with in 2017. Not only are Iranians the friendliest people I've ever met - Iran has some of the most beautiful architecture in the entire world. These are two shots from Isfahan.

I also loved this very early map of New England, which imagined leopards in the land of Dunkin' Donuts and "Manchester by the Sea."
