I’ve been haunted by the loss of 6 children who died in our care, and the conditions I saw first-hand at the border. The humanitarian crisis should deeply concern all Americans, but as a nurse I was especially troubled by the medical conditions.
Based on what I learned at the border, I introduced legislation to help ensure children and vulnerable families who are apprehended here receive appropriate medical screenings and care.

When any human being enters into U.S. custody, both our laws and our moral duty require that we provide safe and sanitary conditions, especially to children and the most vulnerable among them.

Thank you, Representative Underwood. As a pediatric RN and mother, this issue is...I don’t even have words for how horrified and sickened I feel.
The majority of these people were not “apprehended”. They are seeking asylum and entered legally. They should not be locked up.
