Thank you, Congressman. It was true when we live-streamed from the floor of Congress, and it’s true today: Weapons of war have no place in our communities.

When there was a shooting at the Empire State building a few years ago, most of the victims that were hit were struck by stray bullets from highly trained NYC cops who just missed the target. So an untrained, wannabe tough guy with a gun is not going to help in a mass shooting.

I used to think like that but it won’t help. The point of gun control is to make it harder for the bad guys to get guns.

Agreed, but some will find a way, anyway. That is NOT to say do nothing, but restricting semi and fully automatic weapons that can inflict maximum carnage is a VERY short amount of time is the best place to start IMO.

At a minimum, we need a ban on magazines > 10 shots. Buy back any such magazines, no grandfathering. And make it a serious felony to possess or sell such a magazine. They have no purpose in our society.

One reason I support this over what some call an "assault weapons ban" is the difficulty in defining such a weapon effectively. Banning large capacity magazines effectively takes the killing capacity of any weapon way down. No weapons need be confiscated or "bought back."
