Another airport dinner for me and a fellow patron asks the server why she has to pay the 17 cent “employee benefit” on her bill. “That’s my health care,” the minimum wage worker explained. Can’t we do better than this? Should this poor guy have to explain this? #HealthcareForAll

We have to do better. I'm a teacher and my employer deducts $1997 from my check every month for my family's health insurance plan. It doesn't include dental or vision either.

That's absurd. If you're really being charged 2k for healthcare per month, we have to do much much better. No one should be paying that much out of pocket esp not teachers.

That question wins the petty award. Still, as has been said, itemizing this "benefit" is also petty on the restaurant's part. They are benefit shaming their employees.

I'd question it too. Itemizing it for the custom to see is FAR worse than the customer asking "what is this?" since most people will probably just pay it. TBH: after finding out I'd probably give the employee a huge tip and contact corporate. It's a level of employee shaming...

Since the law does not require it to be broken out as a line item on the bill, it's just a sign that whoever owns the restaurant is a right wing/libertarian a**hole. There should also be a line item for "Owner's next yacht", which I guarantee would be more than 17 cents.

No, he shouldn’t, and you should boycott any business that has such an anti-worker practice.https://www.google.com/amp/s/34justice.com/2019/05/01/boycott-the-anti-worker-surcharge/amp/ …
