There is no such thing as an assault weapon. It's a made up term. Just be honest and say you want to confiscate all guns. Show some kind of courage.

Background checks are done every time you purchase a weapon. 8 MILLION ARs are owned by the public. How would you disarm the citizen?

As to assult rifles, there would be a government sponsored buy back. Any weapons not rendered at that time would be considered illegal contaband and would be subject to confiscation. There is truly no purpose or practical reason for civilian possession of these rifles.
