@RepSwalwell bankruptcy code must be amended so in appropriate cases can discharge at least some amount of student loan debt in bankruptcy. It is shameful that companies & those with “business” debt can file for bankruptcy but no help to those of us drowning in student loan debt.

For those that don’t know - before 1976, all educational loans could be discharged in BR. Thereafter until 2005, could be discharged if they had been in repayment for at least 5 years. 2005 law killed that. You can discharge gambling debt but not student loans - nonsensical.

Congress hasn’t always done right by students either. When I consolidated my loans twenty years ago I had to do it at 8%. My mortgage at same time was 3%. I later found out that federal law prevented me from refinancing my student loan at market rate. It is completely shameful.

Wasn’t this way when I graduated, had a national education loan which deleted 50% of amt I owed if I taught 5 years. I did, and govt followed through; I could count on govt to help me with my education. This needs to be done for current grads!
