H.R. 6136 would have ended the visa lottery program – a legal and effective program that treats immigrants from different regions of the globe equally and carefully vets applicants before they are granted green cards.

This bill would have also ended the program that allows U.S. citizens to sponsor their siblings and married children for legal immigration to the U.S.

It also would have made it more difficult for people fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries to seek asylum in the U.S. – a tenet our country was founded upon and that U.S. immigration law guarantees.

H.R. 6136 was no “compromise” as the Republicans claimed – it was an attempt to cut down on legal immigration while addressing none of the real issues with our current immigration policy.
