  1. Fort Pickett is currently processing and temporarily housing Afghans who the United States worked to evacuate — many of whom worked to assist the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. In the wake of my visit, I will continue monitoring the security and medical needs of this operation.

  7. Today, I am thinking of the nearly 3,000 people who died 20 years ago. They began the day like so many others — going to the office, checking in at the airport, reporting to the firehouse — but they never returned home. They were murdered by a horrific attack on our country.

  11. I am so grateful to every man and woman in uniform, volunteer, and caring Virginian who has assisted in this effort.   I will keep monitoring the security and medical needs of this operation, and I will stay engaged with Operation Allies Welcome’s presence at Fort Pickett. 8/8

  12. The has been an extraordinary host to all arriving Afghans and to all the officials present to make this mission a success.   Guard leadership has been heavily engaged in this mission, with members of the Guard even assisting in their civilian capacities. 7/8

  13. During my visit, I met veteran-led teams of volunteers who are working with the to gather and distribute donations.   5,000 diapers are distributed each day at Fort Pickett alone. 6/8

  14. We saw medical tents for those needing urgent care and isolation tents for those diagnosed with COVID-19.   Because each evacuee was tested for COVID-19 before arriving at Fort Pickett and with the use of spot testing, there have been fewer than 10 cases inside. 5/8

  15. Upon arrival, each evacuee is identified, undergoes medical processing, and receives required vaccinations — including against COVID-19. From there, they are processed for resettlement.   I was impressed by the medical capacity propped up in the Fort. 4/8

  17. Just two weeks ago, Fort Pickett was identified as a site to temporarily house evacuees.   In those two weeks, the base has steadily increased its numbers and processing capacity — now temporarily sheltering roughly 5,000 children, women, and men. 2/8
