Emergency declarations should not be taken lightly. President Trump has made a strong case that there’s a humanitarian crisis at our southern border – and I agree.

It’s Congress’ duty to ensure the President is acting within his constitutional authority to address that crisis. After research and consideration, I believe Trump is acting within his authority to take this action.

Emergency declarations do not allow the President to circumvent the Constitution. President Trump’s exercise of national emergency powers is limited. He is not creating a new law or allocating additional funding. He is re-appropriating money already set aside for other projects.

It will be important that Congress continues to monitor and review the president’s role in this process to ensure the actions taken are within constitutional and statutory authority.

I love this. Now a Democratic president won't have to worry about funding healthcare, climate change policy, or gun control. Just declare it an emergency and move $$$ as you see fit. Don't see how Congress plays a meaningful role here, but no big deal.

Is conspiring with a hostile foreign government to try to win an election within his statutory authority? You haven’t been too great at reviewing that....pic.twitter.com/AmRi7Tc1Qn

It’s congress’s job to determine how our tax dollars are spent. Trump has shown by his words and deeds that this is no national emergency. So he is not upholding the constitution—and neither are you.

The Constitution grants Congress the power of the purse, and the President is now attempting to take that power to himself. If the GOP fails to stand up to Trump's unconstitutional act, we will have moved dangerously from a separation of powers, to a mere separation of parties. pic.twitter.com/jP7E2INFvs
