MSU deserves a leader who understands that his or her job is to unify the community, heeds the calls of students, faculty, staff, survivors and activists on campus who have fought to bring these issues to light, and charts a new way forward for MSU.

This was more about Engler not being one of the cultural elites in academia than anything else. Leftist don't want conservatives or Republicans running colleges and universities. They want someone who will force leftist ideology on campus and inhibit free speech to the contrary.
