We announced the introduction of the Super Pollutants Act, which aims to curb methane, black carbon, and HFCs—super pollutants, which are some of the most harmful pollutants in our atmosphere and much more potent than CO2.pic.twitter.com/nGbeNgKXgQ
It creates a task force of experts from U.S. federal agencies to help coordinate domestic and international efforts to reduce super pollutants based on policy recommendations from the @IPCC_CH, @USClimate, and other leading climate intergovernmental organizations.
It also rejects the Trump Administration’s proposal to weaken standards on methane pollution from oil and gas production. It sets standards for new methane sources and if voluntary industry efforts don't decrease emissions on existing standards, mandatory standards kick in.
The bill is based on research by Dr. Veerabhadran Ramanathan of @UCSanDiego that found aggressively cutting super pollutants now could avoid 1.5 degrees of warming by the end of the century.
