In May, 144,278 migrants were apprehended at the border, severely overwhelming DHS. Congress must come together to alleviate this #BorderCrisis. I suggest we begin with @realDonaldTrump's $4.5 billion emergency funding request to give folks on the ground the resources they need.
This $4.5 billion package will help care for unaccompanied minors, provide desperately needed shelter and supplies including food, diapers, and other necessities, and strengthen mission operations for our border agents. This should not be controversial. @SpeakerPelosi must act.
It's controversial because Trump wants it spent on a wall. A big, useless, expensive wall. A monument to his ego. If there were a way to earmark the money for staff, supplies, immigration judges and faster asylum processing, that would be good. But that's not what would happen.
Since the $ Trump has spent so far has resulted in multiple deaths of both children and adults, disgusting, unsafe conditions and cutting off both education and exercise to kids, let’s have a bipartisan commission to oversee and administer this.
