Youth who volunteer just one hour or more a week are 50% less likely to abuse alcohol or engage other destructive behavior. Volunteering and service improves emotional health. It makes people happier and healthier. This is one way we can heal our society and make it better.
This is why I'm introducing legislation to incentivize national service. Just like the GI bill, there will be an added benefit of helping with higher education costs for those who serve others. We all should be called to serve — for the good of our communities and our country.
It’s not the volunteering, per se... the same influence that leads to volunteering is what keeps people from engaging in those behaviors. For example, look at data on teenage boys who hunt. Why are they less likely to get into trouble? They spend time with their fathers.
Volunteerism requires thinking of someone besides yourself.

It's time for Congress to support your bill for young people to do service for their communities. It solves so many societal issues that young people now have. Get them off their phones!
